DEPARTMENT OVERVIEWThe University of California's Office of Federal Governmental Relations is located at the UC Washington Center in Washington, DC. As the largest public research institution in the world, the university engages in numerous partnerships with federal education, health care and research agencies. Working with Congress, the administration, federal agencies, and national organizations, we advocate for the university and its policy and fiscal priorities in education, research, health care and public service.POSITION SUMMARYThe Legislative Intern provides legislative, policy, and administrative support to Federal Governmental Relations (FGR) staff. Working under the direction of FGR staff, the incumbent identifies, develops, and executes opportunities to advocate for UC's systemwide federal policy priorities with the federal government, including with the U.S. Congress, White House, and federal agencies and departments. The incumbent assists in monitoring and reporting on federal policy developments and organizes and presents UC's federal priorities through assisting with the development of written materials, including reports, summaries, talking points, factsheets, social media, and other advocacy-related resources. The ideal candidate is expected to function as an integral part of a fast-paced team, have a proactive approach to work and problem-solving. Must be a strong collaborator who is curious, adaptable, and willing to learn. There are two positions available.Responsibilities65% Legislative and Policy Support:

Track development and progress of federal legislation impacting UC.Develop opportunities to share UC federal priorities with federal stakeholders.Identify and report on opportunities and obstacles to achieving UC's federal policy priorities.Complete a lobbying capstone project on an agreed-upon issue of importance to UC FGR35% Administrative:
Assist in administrative components of conducting federal advocacy, including scheduling meetings with federal stakeholders and executing advocacy events.Assist in development and distribution of advocacy materials to stakeholders at UC and within the federal government.Assist in training and preparing stakeholders for meetings with federal officials.Required Qualifications
Must be a University of California undergraduate student who is participating in the UCDC Washington program Self-motivated and comfortable working both independently, and as part of a team.Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy.Strong interpersonal communications skills.Strong organizational skills.Demonstrated interest and/or prior experience in the areas of federal policymaking.Preferred Qualifications
Strong academic record.Demonstrated experience conducting legislative and policy research.Demonstrated experience using creativity.
